“The Drama Llama Leg Injury”
Leg wounds hide tendon and joint involvement more often than you think. Honestly? Give me a huge body wound over a tiny wound in a bad place any day. Those little, innocent-looking cuts on the lower leg can be the most concerning of all.
First steps:
– Control bleeding with firm pressure
– Gently hose for 5–10 minutes
– Skip the purple sprays and powders — honey or wound gel is much better
– Pop on a clean bandage if there will be a delay before I can examine it
Leg wounds can be serious even when the horse isn’t very sore at the start. Early assessment is everything.
Skip the purple spray until after I’ve had a look — I promise your vet will thank you! Pictured is one lucky horse as this one wasn’t as bad as it looked. They nailed the first aid and also sent me these pics for Triage. Gold Star!
