First Ride at the Grounds… Road To Sydney Royal

Today was our first ride at the grounds, and it felt so good to finally be in the ring here with Angelo.

There’s something about riding in a place like this — a different energy, a quiet pressure, and a sense that this is what you’ve been working towards for so long. Today was about letting him take it all in, look around, and really settle into the atmosphere.

And he did exactly that.

I was so happy with how he felt. Relaxed, focused, and right there with me — a softness and confidence that just felt right. It’s in moments like that you realise all the work, the early mornings, and the preparation have truly come together.

But today wasn’t just about Angelo.

Gee had a moment of his own — and it’s one I don’t think we’ll ever forget.

With Mel aboard, he had a quiet little walk from the back field along the track to the showground. For a pony who has only carried a rider four times, this was a huge milestone. And he was nothing short of a little champion.

You could feel him thinking, trying, taking it all in… and still choosing to be brave.

We honestly couldn’t love this pony more.

And right beside him was Angelo — his steady, constant rock. Calm, confident, just quietly walking alongside him as if to say, “come on little man… you’ve got this.”

It was one of those moments that stops you for a second. Not about competition, not about results — just about partnership, trust, and the journey.

The grounds are buzzing now, the energy building with every class, and it’s everything you imagine Sydney Royal to be.

Back in our little loft above the stables, fully immersed in this bubble, it all feels pretty special. These are the moments you don’t forget.

As members of the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales, we’re also really looking forward to stepping back and watching the ring events from the members’ stand — taking it all in from a different perspective.

Today gave me confidence, but more than that, it gave me perspective.

Now it’s about keeping everything calm, keeping them happy and fresh… and soaking up every second of this experience. ✨
